Significance of the First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah
  1. Allah has taken oath of ten nights in Sūrah Al-Fajr. According to the majority of the commentators of Qur’ān, the nights are those of the (first) ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
  2. Abū Hurayrah radiyallāhu ‘anhu related that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, “On no days is the worship of Allāh desired more than in the (first) ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The fast of each of these days is equal to the fast of a whole year, and the worship of each of these nights is equal to the worship of Laylatul Qadr.” (At-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah)
  3. The mother of the believers, Hafsah radiyallāhu ‘anhā reports that Rasūlullāh sallalahu alayhi wasallam used to fast the (first) nine days of Dhul Hijjah. (Nasā’ee, Ahmad, Aboo Dāwood)

‘Abdullah Ibne ‘Umar radiyallāhu anhu related that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, “No days are as weighty with Allāh and so liked by Him for good deeds than the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. So on these days increasingly read Subhānallah, Lā ilāha illallāh, Alhamdulillāh and Allāhu Akbar.” (Musnad Ahmad)

Virtues of the Day of ‘Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah)
  1. ‘Ā’ishah radiyallāhu anhā reports that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, “There is no day in which Allāh sets free more souls from the fire of hell than on the day of ‘Arafah. And on that day Allāh draws near to the Earth and by way of exhibiting His Pride remarks to the angels, ‘What is the desire of these (servants of mine)?'” (Muslim)
  2. Talhah radiyallāhu ‘anhu reports that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, “Apart from the day of the Battle of Badr, there is no day on which the Shaytān is seen to be more humiliated, more rejected, more depressed and more infuriated than on the day of ‘Arafah, and indeed all this is only because of beholding the abundance of descending mercy (on the day) and Allāh’s forgiveness of the great sins of the servants.” (Mishkāt)
  3. Abū Qatādah Al-Ansārī radiyallāhu ‘anhu narrated that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam was asked about the fast on the day of ‘Arafah. He said, “It compensates for the (minor) sins of the past and the coming year.” (Muslim, At-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah)
Night of ‘Īd-ul-Adhā

The nights of both ‘Īd are described in the Hadīth as amongst the great and sacred nights in the Muslim calendar. To remain awake on the nights of ‘Īd and perform ‘ibādah is a source of great virtue and reward.

  1. Abū Umārah radiyallāhu ‘anhu related that ‘Ā’ishah radiyallāhu anhā reports that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, “Whosoever stays awake and performs ‘ibādah (worship) on the nights of the two ‘Īd, with hope for abundant reward (from Allāh), his heart will not die on the day (i.e. Qiyāmah) when all hearts will be dead.” (At-Targhīb)
  2. Mu’ādh ibn Jabal radiyallāhu ‘anhu relates that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, “Jannah is wājib (incumbent) for those who stay awake with the intention of making ‘ibādah on the following nights: 8th, 9th and 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the night of ‘Id-ul-Fitr and the night of the 15th of Sha’bān.” (At-Targhīb)
Virtues of Qurbānī

Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, “There is nothing dearer to Allāh during the days of Qurbānī than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgement with its horns, hair, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allāh before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart.” (At-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah) For more info on Qurbani click here

Takbīrāt of Tashrīq

The Takbīrāt of Tashrīq are:

Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Lā ilāha illallāhu wallāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Walil-lāhil-hamd.

“Allāh is the Greatest, Allāh is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allāh and Allāh is the Greatest. Allāh is the Greatest and all praises are for Allāh only.”

It is wājib for every adult Muslim to recite these Takbirāt of Tashrīq audibly once after every fard salāh which is performed with jamā’ah (congregation) from the Fajr of 9th Dhul Hijjah to the ‘Asr of 13th Dhul Hijjah (i.e. total of 23 salāh).

Mas’alah: Women should not say it loudly but softly.

Mas’alah: Takbīr should be recited immediately after concluding the fard prayer.

Hajj without a visa!

Since Hajj is among the most virtuous deeds in Islam, & not everyone can afford it (especially on a continuous basis) Allah Ta’ala has attached the reward of optional Hajj to certain other deeds for the benefit of all.

Hereunder is a collection of such deeds.

It should be noted that these deeds are labelled as being more virtuous than nafl (optional) hajj, & not the fard (obligatory) hajj.
1. Wudu at home before proceeding for Salah with Jama’ah.
2. Salatul Ishraq.
3. Going to the Masjid to acquire or impart Knowledge.
4. Umrah in Ramadan.
5. To recite “Subhanallah” 100 times in the morning and evening.? ?
6. Serving one’s Parents.?

? All of the above have been derived from the Hadiths of Nabi ﷺ.

?Hafiz Ibn Rajab Al-Hambali (rahimahullah) has quoted the following deeds that yield the reward of Hajj from various Predecessors (i.e, not necessarily from the Hadith).

  1. Attending the Jumu’ah Salah.
  2. Attending the Eid Salah.
  3. Esha Salah in Congregation.
  4. The fulfillment of all obligations (fard deeds) is better than Nafl Haj.✅
  5. Abstinence from the haram (forbidden) acts are also more virtuous than Nafl Hajj etc.❗
  6. Any act of Good during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah.⏳

? The following is an addition to what Hafiz Ibn Rajab (rahimahullah) has cited:

  1. Spending on a student of Islamic Knowledge.?

(Ma’alim Irshadiyyah of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah, pg.35)

Notes:

✏The promises of gaining the same reward as Hajj that are mentioned above, are restricted to the reward only. It does not mean that one upon whom Hajj is obligatory can merely suffice on these deeds.
✏The purpose here is not to discourage one from the actual Hajj. (That is why it is being circulated now, when the Hajis have already begun to depart) Like they say: There’s nothing like the real thing..

May Allah ﷻ‬‎ grant us all the tawfeeq (ability) to practice on the above, as well as afford us the opportunity to perform the real Hajj repeatedly. Ameen.

Everyone is aware of the devastation that natural disasters bring with them. Many lose their lives, hundreds of thousands lose relatives, entire communities are wiped out and countless buildings and properties are destroyed. Thousands, even millions are left homeless, having lost everything they once owned, living under open skies with nothing to eat and cover themselves with. Even after the calamity has subsided, the death toll continues to increase with the spread of disease. Read more

Hadith on the virtue of spending generously on ‘Ashura

By Mufti Hanif Yusuf Patel

The Messenger of Allah (peace and salutations be upon him) said:

من وسَّع علي عياله يوم عاشوراء وسع الله عليه سائر السنة

Translation: Whoever generously spends on his dependents on the day of Aashura, Allah Ta’ala will expand his sustenance (Baraqah) for the rest of that year.

, The Month of Muharram

auc-web-decorative-images-motifs-1_page_09 Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Glorious Qur’ān,

Lo! The number of the months with Allāh is twelve months by Allāh’s Ordinance in the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred: that is the right religion. So wrong not yourselves in them… (9:36)

The specification of these four sacred months is stated in a hadīth narrated by Abū Bakrah radhiyallāhu ‘anhu that Rasūlullāh sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam said,

, Total Lunar Eclipse – What’s the Sunnah?

Subject to the Decree of Allah, a total eclipse of the moon is expected to be seen in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, May 15th, 2022 from approximately 10:27 p.m. to 1:55 a.m.

The time is approximately the same for Trinidad, Barbados, Grenada and all other Caribbean Islands.

The sun and the moon are two of the greatest signs that we can use to recognise the greatness and might of our creator; Allah Ta’āla, he has placed them in a perfect synchronization for the existence of the earth and entire universe.

“Among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate yourselves to the sun, or to the moon. And prostrate yourselves to Allah who has created them, if it is Him whom you worship.” [41:37]

On Sunday May 15th, we will – in shaa Allah – be witnessing a spectacular occurrence called the Lunar Eclipse. We know that the reason for the eclipse is to warn and make the people ponder of the power of Allah Ta’ala, and to instil in them an urgency to return to the obedience of Allah, the Mighty the Exalted.

The sun and moon have been rising and setting in a set (routine pattern) probably longer than us humans have been around. Ancient cultures have viewed eclipses as mystical and foretelling certain events. They were worshipped out of fear and sometimes held in high esteem. Even till today there are many evils that take place in conjunction with these events. Science also has its own explanation regarding the phenomenon of the eclipses. However, with these manifestations we, as Muslims, grow closer to Allah Ta’āla at these moments and observe those actions that draw His mercy and closeness.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of someone, but they are two signs amongst the Signs of Allah. So, if you see them, offer the Prayer (of eclipse).

What are Muslims supposed to do during a Lunar Eclipse?

In the lifetime of the Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)  the sun eclipsed and he went out dragging his clothes till he reached the Mosque. The people gathered around him and he led them and offered two rak`āt. When the sun (eclipse) cleared, he said, “The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse because of the death of someone, and so when an eclipse occurs, pray and invoke Allah till the eclipse is over.” It happened that a son of the Prophet (ﷺ) called Ibrahim died on that day and the people were talking about that (saying that the eclipse was caused by his death). (Bukhari)

Although this incident was regarding a solar eclipse the Muhaditheen and Fuqaha have derived the similar practises for a lunar one, they are as follows:

Masā-il (Rulings) pertaining to Ṣalātul Khusoof (Salāh of Lunar eclipse)

  • It is Mustaḥab (desirable) to perform Ṣalātul Khusoof.
  • Salātul Khusoof is performed individually according to the Hanafi Madhab. [Other Madhāhib do congregation in Jamā’ah for both lunar and solar. However, for the Hanafi Madhab individual Ṣalāh is performed for a lunar eclipse and congregational Ṣalāh for the solar eclipse]
  • Ṣalātul Khusoof may be performed in two raka’āt or four raka’āt, with one salām or two salāms respectively.
  • It is prayed like any other Nafl Ṣalāh e.g. Tahajjud
  • One should engage in ‘Ibādah throughout the eclipse by either performing lengthy Ṣalāh with long Ruku’ and Sajdah, or by making du’ā, or by both Ṣalāh and du’ā.
  • One should recite long Surah wherein Allah Ta’āla describes the Day of Qiyāmah.
  • There is no Adhān and no Iqāmah
  • There is no Khutbah
  • Make a lot of du’ā and ask for forgiveness for the times not in Ṣalāh

Voluntary acts other than the prayer

It is narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded the believers to make as much istighfār and dhikr of Allah in such times of fear. Also, to make du’ā to Allah at such times is from the prescribed actions as well as to give charity. To free a slave and all other such good actions are recommended at such times, and one should not waste such an opportunity to not only fulfil the sunnah but become closer to Allah with that what he loves.

I ask Allah to protect us all from His punishment and anger, and to make us from those who love him and turn to him in repentance.

And Allah, the Exalted Knows Best.

May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon His Messenger, and his family.

, Did you delay Hajj?

Delaying Hajj

By Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullāh

Hajj is one of the fundamental pillars of Islām, and obligatory upon every Muslim male or female who meets its requirements and who has been granted the capability to carry it out by Allāh ta’ālā. If there are no Shar’ī excuses to prevent you from fulfilling the obligation of hajj, you should not delay.

Shaytān’s Ploy

Every year, however, Shaytān whispers the following thought in the minds of those who are under an obligation to go for hajj: “I have some important reasons preventing me from going this year, but I will definitely go next year, no matter what happens, and I will absolve myself of this obligation.” In this way Shaytān secures a year’s grace for himself. The following year, just before hajj, he will play the same trick again and secure yet another year. Shaytān leads people on in this manner right up to their graves.

The journey to the Hereafter is one which almost every person fears, yet we fail to show any concern for our dear and near ones from the time of their demise to after burial. Our condition at such a critical time is worthy of much lament and shame. Rather than our benefitting the deceased in anyway, we return from the funeral with no benefit to ourselves or to the family; in fact we return with increase in the hurt and grief of the family and maybe sin too. This is because we are neglectful and forget the severity of the stages which our beloved ones are soon to reach. Read more
